Our old friend

Nothing big to talk about lately so why not a short article.

Our old friend Rod Brind'Amour has retired this summer. Probably one of the most jacked players of all-time, Rod has one Stanley Cup to his name. He is now the Carolina Hurricanes Director of Forwards Development. The team will retire his number in a game against our Philly boys in October.

AHL Cards

I've been to a couple AHL games, mostly Amerks when they were Buffalo's farm team. In 2004, I got a team set of the Americans, I have always liked the cards. The 2003-04 Choice set consists of:
#01-Doug Houda, Assistant Coach who retired the year before and took an immediate job
#02-Tom Askey, goalie who has not played in NHL in over 10 years
#03-Milan Bartovic, I remember him, he played a little with Buffalo and Chicago
#04-Jason Botterill, I know a guy who looks just like him
#05-Brian Chapman, drafted by Whalers in 86 (never played a minute in the NHL)
#06-David Cullen, unknown defenseman
#07-Randy Cunneyworth, former NHLer of 16 seasons
#08-Pete Gardiner, ECHLer who signed PTO
#09-Paul Gaustad, finally, an actual NHLer, been with the Sabres since the lockout
#10-Doug Janik, has been up with Dallas, Montreal, and Tampa in recent years
#11-Ryan Jorde, another wasted draft pick
#12-Steve Lingren, probably in Europe
#13-Sean McMorrow, I was on the British League's site and that's where this guy is
#14-Ryan Miller, won Vezina this year
#15-Jason Dawe, played with Buffalo in the 90s but found his way to the AHL
#16-Norm Milley, skilled player... in the AHL
#17-Karel Mosovsky, Buffalo played him for a couple games in '07 or some year
#18-Rick Mrozik, I don't know what to say here, played a little for Calgary
#19-Jiri Novotny, no wait... Buffalo played this guy in '07... I think, also with Columbus in recent years

#21-Geoff Peters, Awwwwww Yeah! I don't know, cool name (instead of Jeff (snore))

#26-Derek Roy, What!?! strange, looks like a parrallel, different picture though

#28-The Moose, each AHL set I got came with a card of the Mascot
#29-Chris Thorburn, Atlanta enforcer along with former Sabre Eric Boultan who once gave me a towel after a charity game
And the 30th card is an unnumbered checklist
A good looking set, but the second Roy confuses me. He's not even wearing a red jersey to correspond with the border (like the 2005-06 Victory set with Luongo's blue or Columbus' different backgrounds). It's a head-scratcher. The whole set might be worth something to a buffalo fan. The Miller, Pominville, Roy, and... Roy might be worth two bucks to an idiot, I don't know maybe they're worth a lot ($3.00!) to someone. Some idiot is selling the set for 12 bucks on eBay, idiot.

I Get High on Paint

Microsoft Paint, that is. Who else has too much time on their hands (Foreigner)? I know I do. That's why, in association with EA Sports and the CHL (not really), I present the first video game in the CHL Series.
CHL 11, the game includes the WHL, QMJHL, and (my personal favorite) OHL. Pictured on the front is future Flyer, 3rd leading OHL scorer-behind (#1 and #2 picks in 2010 draft) Hall and Seguin, and current Bellville Bull, Luke Pither. You can move through the season of your league, play in the All-Star Game, win the league championship, and move on to face three other teams in the Mastercard Memorial Cup for total junior hockey supremacy. I know what your thinking, the NHL has more leagues and international teams, Mr. Ruben, what about your game. Good thinking Lenny; That is why I have included:
Create A Player-put yourself in the game
Create A Team-make a team with all of your favorite young guns, also has vintage and defunct team logos
World Juniors Mode-not just can you play a quick game with the teams, you can play in the World Juniors-one of the greatest displays of hockey skills you will ever see (Olympics my butt)

Pretty awesome, huh?

2008-09 Legends Masterpieces Pack Break

I have broken a few packs in the past, here they both are. I recently purchased two packs, and here they are.

A great player and scorer who is a Hockey (NHL) Hall of Famer

#20-Wayne Gretzky

The greatest of all-time, traded to Los Angeles. couldn't bring them a Cup, just a finals appearance, LA's only Cup final ever.

#23-Mike Bossy

Don't like him or any other Islander from their inagural season until 1995.

#65-Manon Rheaume

She played in two preseason games for Tampa as a publicity stunt.

I didn't own one of those cards, good pack if it weren't for Bossy.

Pack 2:

#27-Bobby Hull

"The Golden Jet" was signed by the Jets to a whopping $1 million contract... Good for him (it was a record at the time. Boy have times changed)

#17-Wayne Gretzky

A different Gretzky, something I talked about here and fixed here.

#72-Eddie Shack

I believe they called him "The Entertainer", Eddie was the man that clinched the '63 Cup for the Leafs.

#82-Bobby Orr

Amazing defenseman who paved the way for offensive defenseman such as Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, and Niklas Lidstrom

I already have the latter two, but another winner with Hull in the WHA and Gretzky.

Just some updates today...

Well, Bill Guerin might play with the Flyers in training camp.

Also, the Sharks, who have signed former Flyer-goalie Antero Niittymaki early this Summer, have signed Antti Niemi, and I think we all know who that is.

Mike Comrie has been signed by the penguins. Why do the penguins have to ruin players I like: Kunitz, Ponikarovsky, Malkin, Fedotanko... Okay, I've always hated Fedotanko.

Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk will probably not be signed. The NHL keeps putting it off and the Devils should just drop it. Its not like he's Rick Nash or Alex Ovechkin. I think Los Angeles should get workin' a contract proposal for the overpaid Russian.
Also, the ice of the Wells Fargo Center (formerly known as the Wachovia Center) has been painted. That's all the news I have for you now. Stay Classy, Planet Earth

2010-11 Score

My second favorite set from the early 90s, Score is back and it has a throwback look.

500 Base, 50 Hot Rookies, The Franchise.

The rookie cards: I like the whole card except one thing... The cloudy/explosion/spacey background behind the player.

The Franchise: Looks great, good insert... One thing, the team name is written in a funny way, yet I love this card.
I look forward to collecting and breaking down this set.

UPDATE: and apparently, owning the Score license makes you crazy with Lindros Fever, because I read the set includes Lindros and Patrick Roy. Looks good
